AKC GR Advocates for Responsible Dog Laws at National County Commissioners Conference

The National Association of Counties (NACo) held their 83rd annual Conference and Exposition in Nashville, TN earlier this month. The conference drew a cross-section of elected officials and county staff from across the country. Attendees came together to learn, network, and share best practices aimed to improve residents’ lives and the efficiency of county government. American Kennel Club Government Relations (GR) staff members were on hand to answer questions, provide resources to promote responsible dog ownership, and discuss effective canine policy.  “We met some wonderful county officials who are clearly dedicated to the people and dogs in their communities. It was a privilege to exchange ideas, learn about their local challenges, and share with them the many programs and resources offered by AKC and our local clubs,” said Patty Van Sicklen, Southeast Regional Manager for AKC Government Relations.

Attending national conferences of legislators provides AKC GR with a unique opportunity to interact personally with lawmakers from across the United States and provide them with information on positive solutions to their canine legislative concerns.  The AKC booth was among the most popular, with lawmakers stopping by to share stories and photos of their dogs and talk about dog issues in their communities. The GR team met legislators who owned Tibetan Terriers, Newfoundlands, Irish Wolfhounds, Poodles, Dachshunds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, and mixed breeds, to name a few.

“Public outreach is an essential component of the role of AKC Government Relations,” said Sheila Goffe, Vice President, AKC Government Relations.  “The ability to meet face-to-face with legislators, legislative staff, and other organizations and share our message of the importance of protecting purebred dogs and promoting responsible dog ownership and breeding makes a tremendous impact.  We are proud to have gained the reputation of providing positive, reasoned solutions for canine policy issues and legislation.”
