The American Kennel Club Government Relations Department held a West Coast Legislative Conference in Sacramento, California on Saturday, November 3. The day-long event took place aboard the Delta King, a riverboat -turned- hotel, docked in Old Town Sacramento.

Approximately 45 AKC Legislative Liaisons, federation leaders, breeders, and club representatives listened to presentations and engaged in lively discussion on a myriad of legislative and public policy topics.

The purpose of this conference is “to bring together club members and other dog lovers and provide them with information and resources about public policy trends, proposals, and emerging issues that impact dog ownership so that we can work together effectively to protect and advance the future dog breeds and dog ownership,” said Sheila Goffe, Vice President, Government Relations for the AKC. “We’re also pleased to introduce Robert Miller, our new Western Regional Legislative Analyst and Community Outreach Coordinator; and to provide the opportunity to bring together dedicated dog owners and club leaders to network and share their experiences in canine policy.”

Speakers and participants networked, shared challenges and experiences they face, and heard from experts on a broad range of issues including:

-Working Together to Fight Anti-Dog Legislation: Tips, Tools, and Resources from AKC (Sheila Goffe);

-Advocacy 101: Engaging Members in Effective Networking and Advocacy (Phil Guidry, Director, Policy Analysis, AKC GR);

-AKC Breeder Field Representatives: Building Support for American Breeders (Dale Hunsberger, AKC Senior Breeder Field Representative);

-Lobbying Insights from California Hunters and Sportsmen (Roy Griffith, California Rifle and Pistol Assn.)
