The American Kennel Club (AKC) is pleased to present U.S. Representative Ted Yoho of Florida’s 3rd Congressional District with the "AKC Legislator of the Year" award. Representative Yoho has earned this accolade for his strong advocacy for the inclusion of responsible pet importation language in the 2018 Farm Bill.

“The grave dangers to public, pet and livestock health posed by irresponsible importation of pets into the U.S. should not be underestimated. AKC is grateful for the leadership of Ted Yoho… for sponsoring language in the Farm bill that requires the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide an estimate of the number of dogs annually imported into the country, along with an estimate of how many of them lack proper health paperwork,” said Sheila Goffe, Vice President of Government Relations.

With a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and over 30 years of veterinary practice behind him, Rep. Yoho’s experience and commitment to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership have made him one of Congress’s leading advocates on canine issues. Rep. Yoho sits on the House Committee on Agriculture and is one of the founding members of the Veterinary Medicine Caucus.

Rep. Yoho accepted the award from AKC Vice President of Government Relations Sheila Goffe on January 30th. The Congressman previously accepted this honor in 2015 for his work protecting responsible dog ownership and preservation of the rights of dog owners and breeders across the United States.

About the Award

The AKC Legislator of the Year award honors legislators who demonstrate a commitment to promoting responsible dog ownership, the well-being of dogs, and protecting the rights of dog owners, exhibitors, and responsible breeders.
