New in the Legislative Action Center: AKC GR Introduces Service Dog Key Issues Webpage

2020-12-11 | AKC Government Relations Department

The American Kennel Club recognizes the tremendous value of working dogs to society, and in particular, the life-changing impact that properly trained service dogs bring to individuals with disabilities.

To help people better understand rules and policies related to service dogs, AKC Government Relations has developed a new Key Issues webpage in the AKC Legislative Action Center regarding service dogsThe page contains issue analyses, resources and talking points for clubs, individuals and lawmakers. The page highlights AKC’s strong support for service dog accommodation as provided in the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and the right to accommodation for an appropriately trained service dog without regard to the dog’s breed or phenotype. In addition, it highlights concerns about fraudulent misrepresentation of pets as service dogs, and contains policy updates.

The new key issue page also includes information about the American Service Dog Access Coalition, a charitable organization co-founded by AKC to establish standards for voluntary credentialing to streamline access for service dog users and venue providers.

New resources include:

  • AKC position statements, including AKC’s position on the misuse of service dogs
  • Information and analysis about the USDOT’s recent rule change impacting dogs on airlines
  • Information about the American Service Dog Access Coalition
  • Other articles and blogs regarding public policy related to service dogs

We encourage you to review these materials and share them with club members, legislators, and other dog owners to help them understand the importance of this issue.  And be sure to keep checking back, as AKC GR continues to add new resources on a broad variety of important legislative issues.
